Critical Reflection Final Draft
Derrick’s critical reflection
After nearly 13 weeks of effective communication, I realize my weakness are mostly in my writing. For instance, for my first assignment on introductory letter, I need to add more clear examples to support my assertion. In addition, I need to work on my grammar, punctuation and capitalization errors. For instance, I do not need to capitalize “Civil Engineering” but instead just write “civil engineering”. I realize that I will always do it so that it looks neat. Secondly, I tend to use too many commas and also lack of parallel verb structure. In this course, I definitely use lesser capitalization unnecessary and to try my best to check my verb tense.
In my second assignment which is reader response, I thought I will do quite well as I always able to summarize and generalize stuff easily. However, I realize that my weakness is on the citation. I tend to always forget to cite properly and also my grammar tends to be very weak in expressing what I want to say. In my third assignment of annotated summary, I have to admit that it is my first time doing annotated summary, I am glad that I am able to give good details in the content. However, I need to improve on my clarity in languages used and also to cite properly. I did not realize that I did not cite the appropriate date for the article. Fortunately, I am glad that it is still consider a good summary according to Professor Brad. I will definitely work harder in my language used and also to check my citation properly next time.
In my last assignment on oral presentation, I was scared that I might do badly even though I came from a business background. Sad to say that I still have my usual issue of speaking too quickly when presenting because of nervousness. I am still glad that I uses appropriate gesture, maintains eye contacts and show clear logical information regarding the project to my audiences. I was shock that I did not speak loud and appropriate tone. As I do not speak English often, I tend to stutter a little as I did not feel confident speaking in English. According to Professor Brad, I need to work on my swaying movement and also involve in Q&A. I did not realize that I was swaying unnecessary, will definitely work on that. Regarding the Q&A, as I did not know as much as my teammates, I feel that it will be better for them to shine. However, I will definitely try my best to answer it next time.
In conclusion, all this feedback will definitely help me improve myself in the future when I am out in the corporate world. For instance, I will be able to write a good summary for my boss, or even present so and properly so that he will understand what ideas I am trying to convey. I even learn that a good self introductory letter is not an easy task. Thus, next time when I am writing my CV, I will be able to do it well.
I personally feels that the past 13 weeks of effective communication is definitely fun under the guidance of Prof Brad, I do not feel that I am in a class at all. It’s always full of fun and laughter in the class. It brings me back to my polytechnic days where we always have a fun lesson with our lecturer. I also want to thanks Professor Brad on helping me out on my ridiculous question like what is “verb tense”. I will definitely strive to achieve greater heights in both English writing skills and communicating skills.
Cheers
